Motorist shoots at off-duty cop in apparent road-rage incident

After trying to cut off an off-duty Metro Police officer multiple times on a south valley roadway, a motorist pulled up next to him and opened fire, according to Lt. Jose Hernandez.

The officer wasn’t injured following the apparent road rage incident on Blue Diamond Road, near the Interstate 15 on-ramp, Hernandez said.

The officer called in the incident about 3:45 p.m. and followed the suspect, who had taken off after the shooting, Hernandez said.

But they didn’t get far before the suspect encountered snarled traffic on the freeway near Russell Road, Hernandez said.

The suspect, who hadn’t been publicly identified, was arrested without resistance by the officer and a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper after he slammed into another vehicle, Hernandez said.

That might have been the instant he realized he’d targeted a police officer and dropped the gun, he added.

Hernandez said the suspect had pulled up to the officer’s driver’s side and opened fire multiple times toward him, but it wasn’t clear where the bullets went or what they struck, if anything. Investigators recovered at least one spent round.

The motorist the suspect crashed into was taken to University Medical Center for minor injuries as was the suspect, Hernandez said.

It wasn’t clear what charges the suspect would face.
