Teen killed in North Las Vegas shooting; suspect still at large

A teenager was shot and killed Saturday morning in North Las Vegas after confronting a suspect who had stolen his family’s truck, according to city police.

The teenager’s father was also shot in the confrontation, but has been stabilized at University Medical Center, North Las Vegas Police Officer Eric Leavitt said.

The truck was stolen from the family’s house near Civic Center Drive and Las Vegas Boulevard North, police said.

Moments after the theft, the victims drove around and found the occupied stolen vehicle in the 2600 block of Ferguson Avenue, Leavitt said.

The 17-year-old victim got out to confront the gunman, who opened fire, Leavitt said. As the father, 44, tried to help his son, the suspect also shot him. The teen died at the scene.

Police found the stolen truck several hours later in the 2700 block of Perliter Avenue, about a mile south from the slaying scene, Leavitt said.

Leavitt said detectives were not ready to release a suspect description.
