Military officials declared a public health emergency at Nellis Air Force Base, limiting access to residents and "mission essential personnel" beginning Saturday.

The declaration, announced today, was prompted by the coronavirus pandemic that has infected at least 1,279 people in Clark County, killing 39. Retirees who use the Satellite Pharmacy will be exempt through April 10.

“This is a rapidly changing situation and these measures, while temporarily inconvenient, are being implemented to mitigate spread of the virus, protect our mission and keep our airmen and families safe,” said 99th Air Base Wing Commander Col. Cavan Craddock in a statement. “This was a tough choice, and there are undoubtedly more tough choices ahead. I appreciate the support and understanding of our retiree, veteran, and local Las Vegas community as we tackle this challenge together.”

The medical center on base will continue to operate for emergencies and appointments for all beneficiaries, including retirees. On-base stores will operate but only for essential sales to personnel and their dependents.
