LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Heeding expert advice is wise

A monumental decision facing Gov. Steve Sisolak is whether to lift the nonessential business shutdown in an effort to boost the local economy. The governor should be applauded for his decision to rely on medical experts for the timing of when to reopen nonessential businesses. Experts rely in part on history — specifically, the experience with the 1918 Spanish flu, when social distancing measures were implemented and proved to be successful in mitigating the spread of the flu.

No doubt the governor will be criticized for causing economic pain in the short term. Ultimately, his decision to rely on the lessons gleaned from 1918 and his reliance on medical experts will prevent a much greater catastrophe.

As the pre-eminent expert in the field, Dr. Anthony Fauci has stated that “if it looks like you’re overreacting, you’re probably doing the right thing.” Sisolak is doing the right thing.
