Letter to the editor:

Trump trying to control narrative

I am frightened for our liberties by the way President Donald Trump is reducing visibility into matters of importance in order to hide events he thinks might drive voters away from him. The latest example of a threat to our democracy is his administration’s proposal to classify all information coming out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If Trump accomplishes this, even though the people within the CDC must have security clearances, they will not be able to talk publicly about what is happening with diseases like the novel coronavirus. This faulty thinking has little to do with getting us through this pandemic, which should be a major concern for any president, and everything to do with Trump’s concern for his re-election prospects.

Trump has lowered the standards of Oval Office from one of great stature on the world stage, able to command effective action in times of crisis, to one of a live -in caretaker respected by fewer and fewer people each day.

Everyone should reflect on what a major historical mistake Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and fellow Republican senators made by not finding Trump guilty in the impeachment trial and removing him from American politics.
