Letter to the editor:

Ignoring science gets these results

There is a strong parallel between the coronavirus pandemic and global warming. Both issues and any real resolution to them have been seriously affected by political division in this country.

The president has, at crucial moments, called both issues a hoax. And a great many conservatives have agreed with him. The result is that this country had no real preparation for combating the virus. Republican governors have been slow or even refused to “flatten the curve” of the pandemic.

The president is playing politics as to which states receive help, and federal management of supplying personal protection equipment has been absent. Instead, we have had almost daily misinformation briefings by the president. All of this has and will end up in an unnecessary increase in the death rate.

Compare all of this with global warming. Again, Donald Trump and his supporters, in opposition to good science, consider this issue to be a hoax. They have impeded the nation’s fight and preparation for the effects of climate change. The economic upheaval resulting from the pandemic will greatly delay this country’s ability to deal with global warming. And, again, delay will mean death.

If you make decisions and take actions that are opposed to science, the result has to be bad.
