Boy, 12, dies two days after being hit by distracted driver in NLV crosswalk

A motorist who blew through a flashing crosswalk and struck two young schoolchildren Friday afternoon is facing a vehicular manslaughter charge following the death of one of the children, according to North Las Vegas Police.

The 12-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon, police said. His sister, 9, who was also hit by the Dodge Ram pickup truck near Losee and Lone Mountain roads, remained at University Medical Center.

Police last said she had life-threatening injuries.

Following the crash, reported at 3:30 p.m. near Somerset Academy, Mark Kline, 47, was booked at the Las Vegas city jail on one count each of failure to maintain a lane, failure to give full time and attention to driving, and two counts of failure to use due care around pedestrians, police said in a news release.

Police, who deemed the crash a result of distracted driving, previously said more severe charges were possible if either of the children died, which was evident by the vehicular manslaughter count added Sunday.

Kline was heading east on Lone Mountain when the crash occurred, police said. Several children were moving through a crosswalk, but only the siblings were struck.

Speed did not appear to be a factor in the incident, Officer Eric Leavitt said Friday. It was a 35 mph zone; 25 mph when children are present.
