Rain in forecast as Democrats head to caucuses

Caucusgoers will likely get caught in the rain Saturday. The National Weather Service is predicting a 90% chance of rain Friday night into Saturday morning.

Check-in for the Democratic presidential caucuses starts at 10 a.m., the same time the weather service is expecting the best chance for rain, meteorologist Jenn Varian said. Up to a half inch of rain is forecast in Clark County.

“The commute there might be challenging,” Varian said.

Caucuses typically last one to three hours, depending on how many people show up. The rain should taper off by 2 or 3 p.m.

More than 75,000 Nevada Democrats voted early this year, which approaches the 2016 total turnout of about 84,000. This is the first year for early voting in the caucuses.

February, the wettest month in Nevada, has been unusually dry this year, Varian said. And this winter overall has been drier than normal at just .07 inches of rain, an inch below average, she said.

Snow is expected Saturday at elevations of 6,000 feet and above, with three to six inches forecast for Kyle and Lee canyons on Mount Charleston, the weather service said.
