A carjacking suspect who led officers on a lengthy pursuit on North Las Vegas roadways was fatally shot by two of them when he reversed his car, crashing into their cruiser early Thursday, according to city police.

The pursuit ended in gunshots in a parking lot at 3655 Craig Road, where the suspect died, said North Las Vegas Police in a news release.

But it began shortly after midnight when police tried pulling him over near Alexander Road and Revere Street, police said. The license plates had identified the Toyota sedan as being carjacked in Las Vegas.

The driver did not stop and fled until he pulled into the parking lot on Craig, near Allen Lane, police said.

Officers got out of a cruiser, but that’s when the suspect immediately put the car in reverse and hit the side of the patrol car, closing the passenger side door into the officer who was exiting, police said.

Two officers subsequently opened fire, striking him multiple times, police said. One of the officers suffered minor injuries, police said.

The officers who opened fire were wearing body cameras, and the police department said it was set to discuss further details early next week.
