Kenny Sanchez, who coached the Bishop Gorman High football team to a pair of USA Today national championships in five seasons as head coach, is stepping down to pursue other opportunities.
"I am grateful for all the opportunities Bishop Gorman has given me over the years and proud of what we accomplished as a program," Sanchez said in a statement. "I wish to thank everyone who helped us create such a special legacy, especially the assistant coaches and players. I would also like to thank the administration, staff, alumni and the entire Bishop Gorman community. Lastly, none of it would have been possible without the support of my family. It is best at this time for me to step away while I consider other opportunities."
Sanchez came to Las Vegas in 2009 as Gorman’s defensive coordinator. In 2015, he was elevated to head coach, leading Gorman to a 65-7 record, four state championships and mythical national titles in 2015 and 2016.
Gorman lost to Liberty in the regional finals last fall, ending its string of 10 straight state championships. It was the program's first loss to a Nevada opponent since 2008.
Sanchez was part of the state championship staff in 10 of his 11 seasons at Gorman. He arrived with brother Tony, the former Gorman head coach, from Cal High in Northern California, where they strived to dethrone national power De La Salle.
Soon, they built that national brand in Las Vegas, taking Gorman from one of the state's best teams to one of the region's best, and then to a perennial top-10 national program. Kenny Sanchez coached a national player of the year, nearly 10 All-Americans, and sent numerous players into college football. Gorman also won the national title in 2014, which was Tony Sanchez's last season before leaving for UNLV.
"We appreciate the contributions Kenny has made to Bishop Gorman and we believe that he will continue to be successful, impacting young adults in the years to come." Gorman athletic director Grant Rice said. "While it will not be easy to replace Coach Sanchez, we will begin the search for a replacement immediately."
