LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

These jurors are not impartial

I cannot help but wonder how Republican members of the Senate will be able to support the defense arguments after taking their oaths to be impartial witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

To do so, they will need to ignore reasonable requests for witnesses and documents, and the fact that Trump has refused to turn over any documents and prevented any relevant witnesses from testifying.

Anyone watching can imagine how those same Republicans would react if they had even half the evidence the House Democrats compiled during their impeachment hearings. They would be salivating, screaming and pounding the table for impeachment of a Democratic president.

Just look what they did in President Bill Clinton’s trial, and that was only about an improper sexual encounter and his having lied about it under oath. This trial is much more serious.

Also, how do Republicans expect Americans to believe that a president who has told more than 15,000 documented lies would not lie to save himself? Since Trump’s defenders have told many lies trying to defend their leader, how do they expect any rational person to believe anything they have to say? Most Americans won’t believe them.

Republicans are not going to allow relevant witnesses to testify and they are not going to vote to remove Trump. Everyone knew this going in, based on what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said before the trial even started — that he was not impartial.
