LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Obstruction is clear to see

There are two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. One article is for using taxpayer money and the power of his office to solicit foreign government to interfere in this year’s presidential election. As bad as that offense is, the second article is much worse.

The second is for obstructing Congress. Trump refused to allow any witnesses to testify before the House and he refused to allow any government documents to be released.

Congress has the constitutional responsibility to serve as a check on the executive branch of government. If we let Trump get away with refusing to allow Congress to perform its oversight duties, we may as well burn the Constitution and become an authoritarian government. Maybe that is what the Republicans want — an imperial presidency, a monarchy. We fought the Revolutionary War to give power to the people, not to a dictator or king.

The charge of obstruction of Congress is self-evident, no witnesses needed. Members of Congress asked for and did not receive the evidence they requested because the president was obstructing them so they could not perform their constitutional duties. This should be an open-and-shut case.
