The Bishop Gorman football program didn’t have to look far for its next head coach.

Brent Browner, the Gaels defensive backs coach last season, has been elevated to the top coaching spot of the program, school officials said. Browner was introduced as the head coach to players during an afternoon weight-training session.

“It is an honor to take the helm of such a storied program,” Browner said in a statement. “I have watched high school football evolve over the years in Las Vegas and the success of Bishop Gorman High School has been a key component of that evolution. I hope to build on that foundation and I am excited for what the future holds.”

Browner replaces Kenny Sanchez, who led Gorman to a pair of USA Today national championships and four state titles in five seasons. Gorman lost to Liberty in the 2019 regional finals, snapping its streak of 10 straight state titles.

Browner is inheriting one of the country’s best-known prep football brands, the result of ESPN-televised games, top facilities and an annual spot in the national top-20 rankings. The Gaels have a roster of bluechip recruits and are expect to again be a contender.

“We had many qualified applicants and lots of interest in the position,” Grant Rice, Gorman’s athletic director, said in a statement. “Bishop Gorman is a special place and I know coach Browner will offer a seamless transition for both the program and the community.”

Browner has more than 15 years of coaching experience, including time on the Faith Lutheran staff. He also has a master’s degree in athletic administration and football coaching, according to Gorman’s news release announcing his hiring.

“As part of the football program for several years, coach Browner understands both the Bishop Gorman community and our expectations,” Rice said. “We are confident that he will continue our tradition of excellence while guiding, mentoring and developing our student-athletes.”

Browner played collegiately at Northern Iowa, where he had six interceptions and three blocked kicks as a senior in 2001. He played professionally in the Arena Football League.
