LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Trump wants to be a tyrant

The May 17 editorial “Accommodating GOP, Trump are transforming America into a dictatorship” was a well-written summary of some of the very negative statements, actions and policies that President Donald Trump and other Republicans have been doing to subvert our democracy.

Since before he was even elected, Trump has vilified anyone and everyone who disagrees with or opposes him. He calls any negative news about him “fake news” and tries to diminish our freedom of speech, all the while blatantly lying thousands of times the past three years.

Trump and the GOP are gradually surrounding themselves and the federal government with lackey loyalists by forcing out opponents and nominating yes-men for positions they lack the qualifications to hold. He has alienated our allies so that they do not trust the U.S. or look to us for leadership in the world. He praises and is envious of dictators such as Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

I encourage everyone to read the books “Fascism: a Warning,” by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and “How Democracies Die,” by Harvard political science and government professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt.
