Connecticut officer killed in suspected DUI crash in Vegas

A Connecticut police officer was killed and another was charged with a DUI in a three-car crash that occurred Friday about three miles from the Las Vegas Strip, Metro Police said.

New Haven police identified Joshua Castellano, a seven-year member of the department, as the one killed in the crash. He was 25.

Fellow New Haven officer Robert Ferraro, 34, of East Haven, Connecticut, was charged with a DUI resulting in death and reckless driving, according to Clark County Justice Court records.

Police received a report of the crash at 3:58 a.m. near the intersection of West Spring Mountain Road and South Decatur Boulevard. Castellano and Ferraro were two of the six occupants in a 2020 Rolls Royce Cullinan that lost control at a high speed and struck a white 2021 Ford Mustang waiting to enter Spring Mountain from a private driveway, police said.

After striking the Mustang, the Rolls Royce continued west on Spring Mountain and collided with utility poles, landscaping and a fire hydrant before it overturned onto its roof, ejected Castellano, and uprighted itself before coming to a stop, police said. Debris from the collision struck an unoccupied 2014 Scion XB on the road.

Castellano was transported to University Medical Center where he later died, police said. Ferraro remained at the scene and showed signs of impairment, police said. He was then arrested.

Ferraro, along with the other occupants of the Rolls Royce that weren’t ejected were listed with minor injuries, police said. The driver of the Mustang also received minor injuries.

The collision remains under investigation, police said.

In a social media post, the New Haven Police Department said, “Please keep our officers, department, and the family of Officer Castellano in your prayers.”
