OPINION:

Be patient with Jan. 6 investigation

Judge David Carter concluded that Donald Trump, when he was president, and attorney John Eastman “launched a campaign to overturn a democratic election, an action unprecedented in American history.”

Our former president tried to take our representative democracy away from us. If we don’t find out what went on during that inglorious day, Jan. 6 will repeat itself.

The Justice Department does not comment on an ongoing investigation. Additionally, there have been no leaks from that skillful group of lawyers. More than 800 persons have been charged with crimes associated with their Jan. 6 activities. It takes a wide net to catch a big fish, and law enforcement must be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt if charges are to be brought. As poet John Dryden wrote, “beware the fury of a patient man.”

In a redux of the events of his first impeachment, Donald Trump has asked Vladimir Putin to provide dirt on the Biden family. Once again, he is putting his own priorities above America’s interests. Why else would he call Putin a genius, when the man’s actions in Ukraine have shown him to be a war criminal?
