LVMS retaining wall passed NASCAR’s muster

Although NASCAR drivers Jeff Gordon and Greg Biffle were highly critical of the “gap” in the inside guard wall at Las Vegas Motor Speedway following Gordon’s hard crash late in Sunday’s UAW-Dodge 400, NASCAR had approved the configuration according to track spokesman Jeff Motley.

Gordon hit a spot in the wall where there is an opening for emergency vehicles to gain access to the track from the infield. The opening also allows access to the speedway’s oval from the infield road course.

Every track on the NASCAR circuit that has an infield road course and uses a portion of the oval has similar openings, Motley noted.

Motley said LVMS officials would work with NASCAR to see if the area needed to be altered but added the speedway could not make any changes – including adding energy-absorbing ‘soft walls’ – without NASCAR’s approval.
