Las Vegas Motor Speedway sketch pad

Today and Sunday I will be drawing sketches from the infield of Las Vegas Motor Speedway and posting them here on Bloggity.

But before I get to today’s observations, I’ve got a bone to pick with our new president. In Tuesday’s speech to Congress, President Obama said, “I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.” Well, Mr. President, the Germans actually invented the automobile. Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler are credited with inventing the car in 1885. Henry Ford’s cars didn’t hit the streets until 1896.

I think it’s time for our new president to attend a NASCAR race and get a little gasoline pumping through his veins.

Due to recent events, Goodyear decided to hire its own spotter.

The unveiling of the new Earnhardt and Elvis die-cast car featured the flying Elvi and the usual display of Las Vegas showgirls. After the real-life version of the collectible was revealed, it seemed that every middle-aged man wearing a Dale Earnhardt Jr. shirt wanted to have his picture taken with the showgirls. For over an hour those showgirls patiently stood there for photos.

Fans loved the new openings in the windows around the garage stalls that allow them to get autographs, but I’m not sure how the drivers feel about it.

Isn’t this ironic?

This is a photo of the Cup cars lining up to hit the track for practice.

This one of my editorial cartoons from earlier in the week about General Motors' recent woes.

Finally, here's a sketch of Carroll Shelby.
