Man who died after shooting police officer is identifed

The Clark County coroner's office has identified the man who shot a police officer after a car chase Thursday as Dominic Ian Nieto.

Officers discovered Nieto, 30, dead inside the vehicle after a more than two-hour standoff.

Metro Police were called to the Penthouse Gentlemen's Club on West Russell Road about 7 a.m. Thursday after shots were fired inside the strip club, police said.

When officers arrived, a black Hummer H-3 had fled the club's parking lot. Police spotted the vehicle on Rainbow Boulevard near Russell Road and pursued it.

The vehicle ended up on its side when Nieto lost control of the Hummer in a desert lot near Durango High School, police said.

As Metro officer Blake Penny, a 10-year veteran of the police force, approached, Nieto opened the driver's door, stood up and fired several times, hitting the officer in the right leg.

Penny was taken to Spring Valley Hospital, had surgery and was released Monday. He is recovering with his family, police said.
