War’s Jordan plays on despite tragedy

Tragedy didn’t keep Lonnie Jordan of War from his current engagement at the Flamingo, opening for comedian George Wallace.

Jordan’s mother, Owena Keihle, died from smoke inhalation suffered during a fire at her home in Compton, Calif., on Jan. 8.

“She had been smoking in bed when the fire started,” Jordan said during a recent interview. “She tried to escape out the door but fell and didn’t make

it.”

Rescue workers were unable to revive her.

Jordan said he had just returned from a road trip when he arrived at his mother’s residence.

“It wasn’t a happy scene for me to drive up and see her in front of the house under a sheet while the house was going up in flames,” Jordan said.

After services Jordan resumed his schedule, opening with War at the Flamingo last week for an engagement that runs through Jan. 26.
