Berkley gives her take on Obama-Chavez handshake

WASHINGTON - Democratic Rep. Sheley Berkley weighed in on the ongoing flap over the president's meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Berkley said President Barack Obama was probably set up in Venezuela, and had little choice but to shake his hand.

"A number of people have commented on the fact that perhaps President Obama should not have shaken the hand of President Chavez when he approached him," Berkley said during a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs committee this week, according to a transcript.

"As an American, I would've been mortified if our president had done anything other than what he did. I have no doubt that was a setup. President Chavez is a very clever fellow. He knew exactly what he was doing, and I think that our president behaved in a manner that could make all of us very proud of him," said Berkley.

Fellow Nevadan, Republican Sen. John Ensign, ignited a furor Sunday when he said Obama acted irresponsibly during the meeting with the Venezuelan leader.
