The Las Vegas 51s new owners, Stevens Baseball Group, plans to change the team's name in 2009. Derek Stevens, chief executive of the group, wants to let the public decide on the team's new moniker. Stevens Baseball Group purchased the 25-year-old franchise from Mandalay Baseball Properties last week. Stevens also discussed the possibility of a new stadium, but said that it was not a "top priority." The 51s are currently the Triple-A team for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Nice of you to post a link to a story you got scooped on – through no fault of your own, mind you... it's no surprise that the RJ, which owns part of the 51s, would be spoon-fed every bit of inside information on that team.
From the sound of things, it would seem as though this will be the last year of the 51s' affiliation with the Dodgers. Giants to Reno, Dodgers to Fresno, D-Backs to Vegas! Everybody rotate!
In the prime of minor league baseball, teams chose monikers that reflected their communities. The San Francisco Seals, Hollywood Stars, Oakland Oaks, etc. Some graduated to the major leagues (San Diego Padres). Some reflected the affiliation with the major league team (Visalia Reds, San Jose Giants). Area 51's doesn't really make it in either category. Like too many things these days, affiliations are changed more than underwear. For that reason, I kind of like taking the parent club name to encourage a more lasting relationship. Reno Giants, Las Vegas Rockies sounds nice. Beats the Modesto Nuts.
I was always a fan of the idea of the "Desert Dodgers" instead of "Las Vegas 51s." And, if a major league team ever came to Vegas, I'd be all for the Las Vegas Aces. But nobody asked me!
Last year, the new owner of the Portland Beavers decided too many people were confusing his team with the suddenly-baseball-successful Oregon State Beavers. He thought about changing the name to Sockeyes or Wet Sox or Green Sox or Thorns before ultimately deciding to stick with Beavers. Good call.
Las Vegas Aces sounds good, better than the Deuces. Or how about the Vegas One Eyed Jacks?
