A Month of Possibility

The World Cup started this past Friday. Thirty-two countries, as different as can be, will put their best eleven players on the soccer pitch and compete for the ultimate soccer prize – to be crowned world champions. The event happens every four years and is the most prestigious and well attended sporting event in the world.

As I watched the buildup to the games and the games themselves so far, I am struck by the camaraderie between the players on the teams and their fans. But more importantly, the respect shown between the players on different teams and the fans who come to not only cheer on their favorite team, but to watch excellent sport is amazing. All fans know that one day, their team will be successful and on another, it will not. These fans bond in a way that only the World Cup could create. It is truly a multi-cultural experience.

It appears to me that the time is right to extend this camaraderie beyond the soccer pitch. The world can come together in the hopes of understanding each other better and ending tensions. Business needs to be included in this multi-cultural dialogue. I see what these teams can do together and for their countries and how they unite the world. I am filled with a sense of optimism and opportunity. We can all learn more about each other.

Unique business issues. There are very different business issues around the world. By getting to know these different issues, businesses can better understand and appreciate what other businesses must deal with. Better understanding will develop ways to help and potential new business models to replicate.

Unique business environments. Each business in the U.S. is faced with a different business climate. Imagine how different business environments are across the globe. Once again, learning about these different business climates might lead to change and potentially new goods and services to satisfy identified issues.

Unique business opportunities. We only know what we know. By getting to know other businesses in other countries, we might identify some unique business opportunities that the world needs. Our businesses just might be the ones that are able to satisfy those needs.

It is time to start engaging other cultures and acting like one connected world. The opportunities are endless.

Until next time…

Craig
