Golf tourney to help athletic departments at three struggling schools

Community Angel: Susan Spencer

Susan Spencer, former general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, poses at Rancho High School Monday, April 7, 2014. Spencer’s nonprofit A Level Playing Field has given more than $30,000 of equipment and funds to the Rancho HS football team.

Two Heisman Trophy winners, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and other football notables will be in Las Vegas this weekend to help raise money for the athletic departments at Desert Pines, Rancho and Valley high schools.

A Level Playing Field, a nonprofit founded by former Philadelphia Eagles executive Susan Spencer to benefit struggling schools in her adopted hometown, hosts its third-annual golf tournament at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bear’s Best Las Vegas.

Using her connections in football, Spencer is able to annually coordinate with a handful of former players to support her cause.

The list of former athletes scheduled to appear is highlighted by Jonathan Ogden, a Henderson resident, Super Bowl champion with the Baltimore Ravens and Pro Football Hall of Famer. Others scheduled to attend include: Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers and Mike Rozier, former NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper, College Football Hall of Famer and local Napoleon McCallum, and former Steeler Louis Lipps.

In 2014, the tournament raised $37,000, Spencer said last year.

There are open spots to participate in the tournament and social events during the weekend. Visit alevelplayingfield.org for information.
