Pop Evolution has … what’s the word?
A little less than a year after debuting at South Point, David Perrico’s 18-piece show band has a regular headlining gig in a Las Vegas showroom. Pop Evolution is set to begin a regular run of bi-weekly engagements at the Stratosphere beginning May 7.
The band will appear the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 10 p.m., with ticket prices set at $20. The band premiered as a $5 act at South Point Showroom last May 19 and has more recently performed on select Saturday nights at the Lounge at the Palms.
For months, Perrico has been seeking a regular venue to showcase Pop Evolution. Conveniently, that search has wound up at the Stratosphere, where Perrico is already bandleader for the six-piece crew in “Pin Up.”
Unlike that start-from-scratch Strat production starring Claire Sinclair and featuring five dancers and a bevy of set pieces, Pop Evolution is ready-made for the stage.
“It’s great to have a home for it and a hotel behind it,” Perrico said today in a phone conversation. “We’ll be a headliner at the hotel, and it’s a situation where we can just turn the key and go.”
Populated by many of the city’s top musicians, Pop Evolution stamps such covers as “Circus” by Britney Spears, “Miss You” by The Rolling Stones, “Rollin’ in the Deep” by Adele and “Dr. Feelgood” by Motley Crue, with Perrico’s own innovative horn arrangements.
Center vocalist Naomi Mauro is back after taking some time off for maternity leave, and Savannah Smith also is going to be singing select numbers with the band in its new residency. Expect Mauro and her to duet on Heart’s “Barracuda” and “Magic Man.”
Other updates to the set list include “Hot for Teacher” by Van Halen and “YYZ” by Rush. As Perrico says, “We’re open for anything.”
If you’re playing “YYZ” with an 18-piece band, you are indeed open for anything.
