Maidana vs. Mayweather color blog: Bieber, Lil Wayne again in Mayweather’s camp

Mayweather vs. Maidana

Steve Marcus

Floyd Mayweather Jr. of the U.S. celebrates his victory over Marcos Maidana of Argentina during their WBC/WBA welterweight unification fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Mayweather improved his record to 46-0.

The champ entered the ring with rappers and clowns and even a Bieber in tow. He left with a cut over his right eye, a sore midsection and a majority decision. The capacity crowd of 16,268 at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night was treated to an action-filled and highly competitive world welterweight title bout, culminating in a majority decision for undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. over challenger Marcos Maidana.

The strong title bout and robust undercard of three entertaining title fights pleased Golden Boy Boxing chief Richard Schaefer. What’s next for Mayweather is another fight at MGM Grand in September, either a rematch against Maidana or a title defense against England’s Amir Khan, who survived the unorthodox style of left-hander Luis Collazo in one of the undercard fights. But September is Ramadan for the Muslim Khan, who will not fight while fasting.

Khan and Maidana want to fight Mayweather at some point. Whomever the Money Man selects, it will be a financial boon to the champ, challenger and (certainly) the host hotel.

The incalculable value of famous folks who populate these fights was evident again Saturday: Joining Biebs in the crowd were actor Barry Pepper, rapper Bow Wow, Caitlin Fitzgerald (of "Masters of Sex" on Showtime, the cable outfit that broadcasts Mayweather's fights), reality TV star Chris "Big Black" Boykin, actor Chris Pine, Dash Mihok (of "Ray Donovan" on Showtime), comic Dave Chappelle, hip-hip artists Fabolous and French Montana, actor Jake Gyllenhaal, pop star Joe Jonas and reality TV star (an unmarried one) Juan Pablo Galavis.

But the star among all those stars was the champ, as Mayweather won an exiting fight and, several minutes afterward, conducted a group chant by fans who were still at ringside. They were fans of Maidana, many visiting from Argentina, proving that the Las Vegas resident is really a world champion.
