We begin Monday By the Numbers with a betting line FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY.

I use the upper-case effect to reflect the signage at T-Mobile Arena, where on Tuesday night the Harlem Globetrotters play the World All-Stars, formerly known as the Washington Generals. I asked Jay Rood, sports book director for MGM Resorts, to establish a point spread and over/under line for the Trotters vs. All-Stars.

The answer: Harlem Globetrotters as 5.5-point favorites, with the total set at 175.5. It seems the spread is fairly close, but the Trotters usually don’t win by blowouts and sometimes just edge the All-Stars by a single point. The final score is rarely the point anyway, but the score is accurately tabulated.

The last time the Trotters lost was Jan. 5, 1971, in Martin, Tenn., in a night that has bloomed to mythological status among sports fans. The Trotters had apparently lost track of the score before noticing, to their collective dismay, that they trailed by 12 points with 2 minutes left to play. They staged a furious rally but fell short and lost 100-99.

So rankled by that defeat were the Trotters that, to this day, legendary guard Curly Neal becomes angry when asked of it (he did not play that night for an injury).

As it is not unfathomable that the Trotters’ opponent will win a game — it is said that the All-Stars play straight up on offense, and straight up on defense about 40 percent of the time (playing the required foil role the other 60 percent of the time as the Trotters run their “reams,” or trick plays). That means the All-Stars are at a competitive disadvantage in terms of talent and template (for a great assessment of the Globetrotters’ stats, hit this story by Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com).

Thus, we tip off a Monday By the Numbers that will fast break to the AFAN AIDS Walk on Sunday at Town Square, dish over to Criss Angel and “Believe” at the Luxor and alley-oop to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada for the dunk!
