Family escapes house fire, but pet cat dies

Two adults and three teenagers escaped from a fire in a home a few blocks northeast of Freedom Park in North Las Vegas, fire officials reported tonight.

Firefighters responded about 5:11 p.m. to the home at 3504 Marlborough Ave., near Pecos Road and Washington Avenue, according to Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski.

One of the people in the house at the time the fire started was treated on the scene for a burn on the hand after trying to throw water on the flames, Szymanski said.

One pet bird was saved, but the family's cat died in the fire, which caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to the single-story, concrete block home, Szymanski said.

The fire started in the closet of a bedroom, but what caused the blaze is unknown at this time, Szymanski said.

  1. I love animals but I would never expect a firefighter to risk his life to save one. Sorry all you animal rights activists but contrary to your beliefs animals and humans are NOT equal.
