Smell theory all wet

So the Las Vegas Valley populace apparently includes not only plenty of amateur psychologists (see: hepatitis crisis, Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada) but also experts in identifying malodorous smells they've never actually encountered.

An article I wrote for Wednesday's edition of the Sun - "Big stink at justice center a mystery, but real enough to sicken workers" - prompted about a dozen locals to call or email regarding the source of the stench wafting through the lower level of the Regional Justice Center: dry drains.

Well, I'm here to debunk that theory shared by all but one commenter, many of whom expressed their view with the assuredness of a 30-year plumber. On my own, I would not presume to contradict any plumber, expert or otherwise, but I asked Michael Green - the assistant director of the county's real property management department - about the drains.

Green pointed to the drains (which Sun photojournalist Tiffany Brown documented in our print and online editions) and said his maintenance staff checks the drains each day, and they've always been damp. Without water, the stench of sewage could easily seep through.

On to the next theory...
