1st & 10 Pen almost as cool as a fresh set of downs

NOW

A Henderson man named Norman Heyman is trying to market a ball-point pen shaped like a football first-down marker. He calls it the "1st & 10 Pen." There was one in my mailbox when I got to work this morning encased in enough bubble wrap to ship at least four of those leg lamps in "Christmas Story" that Ralphie's old man was so fond of.

The cover letter was signed "Norman Heyman, Quarterback of Sales."

Other than that, his pen is pretty cool.

He says he's trying to get permission from the NFL and the NCAA to put their team and school logos on his pens. (Well, there's always the local Pop Warner league and/or the Detroit Lions.)

Norm also says the 1st & Ten Pen Web site (www.firstandtenpen.com) will either be up in running in August or short by inches.

My suggestion is that Norm's people get with the Woody Hayes' bobblehead doll people. Woody was notorious for ripping apart sideline markers so this seems like a perfect way for a Quarterback of Sales and a Coach of Production to make a quick buck.

The 1st & Ten Pen comes with a handy clip that can easily be attached to the "Joe Namath Pocket Protector."

THEN

"You know, I still didn't know what the hell he was talking about." -- Woody "Three Yards and a Cloud of Dust" Hayes, after spending an entire day listening to Sid Gillman describe his passing offense.
