New forward Quintrell Thomas starts summer school

Quintrell Thomas officially became a Rebel on Monday when he attended his first UNLV classes during summer session.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward from Newark, N.J., started one of 26 games at Kansas last season. He averaged 1.5 points and 2 rebounds, and he shot 44 percent from the field.

Rebels coach Lon Kruger was allowed to speak about Thomas, for the first time, after he attended class at UNLV.

“It’s not so surprising, but it's good news,” Kruger, who is recruiting on the East coast, said of Thomas going to summer session. “We recruited him very hard last year. When it came down to his final choice, he picked Kansas. That’s certainly an outstanding program.

“But the second time around, we’re delighted he’s here.”

Thomas will redshirt in 2009-10 and have three seasons of eligibility remaining, beginning in 2010-11.

“He’s a versatile big guy who can play inside and outside,” Kruger said. “He’s a terrific rebounder. And it’ll be great for our big men to go against him every day in practice during his redshirt season.

“He’s pretty easy-going. He’s real competitive. He works hard. He’s a good guy, and it’s great to add him to our program.”
