Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.
Oakland Athletics minus-108 at Kansas City Royals: $432 to win $400
Soon football will be completely upon us and I won’t have to hit the diamond anymore. I’ve kept my head above water this summer, but baseball is not my favorite sport to bet and lately it’s been kicking me in the teeth.
Alas, I’m not quite done with baseball. Hopefully my luck turns around today in one of my favorite cities in the country: Kansas City.
It’s rare to get this low of a price on the first-place Athletics, who haven’t been at less than minus-110 since July 12. That alone is enough for me to roll with Oakland, but getting Sonny Gray on the mound makes it even better.
Gray is coming off his worst start of the season: 10 hits, six earned runs and four walks in 4 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay. But before that, Gray allowed one run or less in six straight starts and he’s been solid the entire season. I’m confident he’ll bounce back and help the Athletics snap the Royals’ seven-game winning streak.
Standings: Bern (42-30-1, $13,724), Keefer (33-38, $8,992), Brewer (29-41-3, $2,350)
