Vegas Play of the Day: Arizona at UNLV

UNLV Basketball Versus Utah at MGM Grand

L.E. Baskow

UNLV forward Goodluck Okonoboh (11) dunks the ball with authority over Utah during their men’s basketball game at the MGM Garden Arena on Saturday, December 20, 2014.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

UNLV plus-12.5 vs. Arizona: $550 to win $500 : Undefeated Arizona, the nation’s third-ranked team, is favored by too many points. I thought UNLV would be just a seven-point underdog.

Arizona seems to play to the level of its competition. Arizona rallied to beat UTEP by five points last week on the road, and also had close wins against Missouri and Kansas State. All three teams are comparable to UNLV, which last year kept it close at Arizona in a five-point loss.

While UNLV has lost by double digits in all three of its defeats — all to teams in the Pac-12 Conference, where Arizona is the best team — this game could be different. Walk-up ticket sales are expected to be strong tonight, giving UNLV a distinct home court advantage.

The Rebels won’t win the game straight up. But I expect an improved performance to cover the spreads.

Standings: Bern (59-52-1, $10,926), Keefer (53-60-2, $7,727), Brewer (52-57-3, $5,555)
