Vegas Play of the Day: New Mexico at Boise State

UNLV vs. New Mexico

New Mexico’s Cameron Bairstow scores under the basket in front of UNLV’s Roscoe Smith in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, in Albuquerque.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point.

Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

New Mexico plus-2.5 at Boise State: $550 to win $500

The Broncos are in the middle of a tough stretch of their schedule that’s made worse by the way the first two games went. First Boise State blew an 11-point lead in the final four minutes at UNLV, and then it blew a 14-point second-half lead on a 3-pointer in the final seconds at home against San Diego State.

After that it was a six-point loss at Utah State, and now the Broncos get rewarded with a home game against a New Mexico team that can move into a tie for first place with a victory. This is sort of a last stand for Boise State; win and there’s still a chance at third place, lose and the Broncos may pack it up entirely.

If San Diego State hadn’t lost on Tuesday, I might have liked Boise State in this one. But with the extra motivation against a reeling Broncos team, I like New Mexico to at least keep it within two and maybe win outright.

Standings: Bern (8-5, $10,250), Brewer (4-6-2, $8,820), Keefer (4-7, $8,517.50)
