Vegas Play of the Day: Giants at Chicago White Sox

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

San Francisco Giants (-120) at Chicago White Sox: $600 to win $500: All signs point to the White Sox winning this game, but it’s important to remember trends don’t tell the entire story in handicapping.

True, the Giants have lost six of seven games and were swept last weekend by the Colorado Rockies. But the Giants had leads late in each game before closer Sergio Romo blew saves. And Sunday, Buster Posey and Angel Pagan were injured. Both will return tonight.

True, Chicago starter John Danks has been on a hot streak lately, but it’s John Danks not John Smoltz. Danks is mediocre at best, and his true colors will show tonight.

In his past four outings, Danks has lasted into the seventh inning each time, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.53 earned run average. Those trends will end against a Giants team that, despite the losing streak, still has baseball’s best record.

And speaking on trends that are going to end. This, hopefully, is when I can stop the bleeding in our play of the day contest. I’m on the verge of needing to get a loan to continue.

Standings: Bern (32-23-1, $12,079), Keefer (25-31, $8,074), Brewer (18-28-3, $3,925)
