Florida State’s Jameis Winston with The Coaches’ Trophy after the NCAA BCS National Championship college football game against Auburn Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, in Pasadena, Calif. Florida State won 34-31.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Florida State minus-1.5 at Miami, $550 to win $500: While Florida State’s strength is Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston at quarterback, don’t forget about the solid Seminoles defense. It is the 31st-best defense in college football, which is bad news for freshman Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya.

At this time last year, Florida State was on its way to winning the national championship. Kaaya, who has improved tremendously since the beginning of the season, was just in high school. He hasn’t seen a defense this good.

Defense wins championships. Florida State’s is pretty special, giving up just 22 points per game. The Seminoles won’t slip up against three-loss Miami in their pursuit of another title.

Standings: Bern (54-47-1, $11,726), Keefer (46-56-1, $6,731), Brewer (45-54-3, $3,155)
