Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.
San Francisco Giants (minus-120) vs. St Louis Cardinals: $360 to win $300: Yadier Molina’s injury will drastically change the National League Championship Series. The Cardinals’ catcher is the best in the game and a big reason why St. Louis is playing in its fourth-straight NLCS.
John Lackey, tonight’s St. Louis starter, is slow in his delivery to the plate. A.J. Pierzynski, Molina’s replacement, is a savvy big-league veteran. But he doesn’t have a throwing arm comparable to Molina's. Nobody does, actually. Expect San Francisco to turn the game into a track meet, attempting to steal bases.
Additionally, Molina is one of St. Louis’ best hitters, leaving a big-time hole in the lineup. Batters will be hitting out of their traditional order, so the light-hitting Pierzynski bats toward the bottom.
The Giants are the safe play, especially with the series transitioning to the Bay Area.
Standings: Bern (47-43-1, $10,651), Keefer (45-49, $10,061), Brewer (42-48-3, $5,805)
