Vegas Play of the Day: Florida Marlins and New York Mets

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

New York Mets (-135) vs Florida Marlins: $675 to win $500 : September baseball is often difficult to handicap because it’s tough to predict the mentality players have in the last month of the season on teams out of the pennant race.

Some teams are playing out the final weeks and looking ahead to vacation plans. Others have young players giving their best effort in an attempt to earn a roster spot next spring. That’s appears to be the mentality in New York. The Mets have some of the best young players in baseball and are giving them a chance to make an impression in the final month of the season.

Florida hasn’t been the same since slugger Giancarlo Stanton was hit in the face by a pitch last week to end his season. The Marlins like power in their lineup.

Mets starter Jacob deGrom is in the equation for rookie of the year and has a 2.62 earned run average and just one loss since July 1.

Standings: Bern (45-356-1, $12,637), Keefer (41-43, $10,282), Brewer (36-44-3, $4,800)
