San Francisco Giants plus-115 at Chicago Cubs: $320 to win $368
With an abbreviated schedule Thursday, the betting board isn’t flush with opportunities. The only option involves going in a direction where there might be a morsel of value.
The Giants and Cubs will tangle in arguably the biggest series of the weekend, with the former a half game ahead of the latter in the race for the National League’s final playoff spot. San Francisco is the better team by any measure — its plus-61 run differential is several times better than Chicago’s plus-10, for example — but Chicago is at home.
Given a somewhat even pitching matchup tonight with San Francisco’s Chris Heston against Chicago’s Jason Hammel, the first game looks like a true toss-up. Getting a decent plus-price on the Giants must be a take.
They remain one of the hottest teams in baseball, having won 15 of their last 20 games. The Cubs snapped a five-game win streak last night on the final day of a road trip.
I’m never high on backing a team in its first game returning home, especially not against an opponent with as much urgency as the Giants coming in.
