Vegas Play of the Day: Rays at Rangers

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Texas Rangers minus-105 vs. Tampa Bay Rays: $420 to win $400:: Drew Smyly returns from the disabled list today for the Tampa Rays for his first big-league action since early May because of a torn labrum. Even if Smyly is great, he won’t pitch past the sixth inning. That will put the game in the hands of the Rays bullpen, which ranks 21st in baseball with a 3.83 earned run average.

An afternoon start in Texas will help the Rangers, whose players are familiar with playing in the Texas heat. It’s so bad they often start Sunday games in the early evening, meaning a game against Tampa Bay that appears to be evenly matched could swing in the Rangers’ favor because of their tolerance to the elements. The teams have near identical records and Rangers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo has similar numbers to Smyly.

It’s just Gallardo isn’t coming off the disabled list. The Rangers have won in three of his last four starts. And the Rangers have won the initial two games of the series against Tampa Bay and are just three games out of the second wild card spot in the American League.
