Vegas Play of the Day: Cardinals at Diamondbacks

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

St. Louis Cardinals minus-120 at Arizona Diamondbacks: $360 to win $300: The Cardinals, despite losing multiple players at key positions to injury this season, somehow have the best record in baseball. That’s what happens when you receive strong starting pitching.

As much as it pains this Pittsburgh Pirates fan, the Cardinals with Carlos Martinez on the pitching hill are a solid bet today. (My Pirates probably won’t catch the Cardinals in the standings, anyway). Martinez is 12-6 with a 2.85 earned run average and 150 strikeouts in 148.1 innings pitched. The Cardinals have lost his last two starts, which is partially why Martinez is just a minus-120 favorite.

The Diamondbacks have slowly nudged into contention for the National League wild card with above average play in the second half of the season. But they are no match for the Cardinals, who have won the initial two games of the series. I’ll gladly wager on the better team and better pitcher.

Current Standings: (as of July 1): Brewer (10-8, $10,440), Bern (6-6, $10,250), Keefer (7-14, $6,261)

Lifetime Records: 2014-15 champion Bern (89-80-1), Keefer (91-97-2), Brewer (80-95-2)
