Vegas Play of the Day: New Mexico at San Diego State

Mountain West Conference Tournament - New Mexico vs. San Diego State

Sam Morris / Las Vegas Sun

San Diego State forward J.J. O’brien fouls New Mexico guard Hugh Greenwood during their Mountain West Conference tournament championship game Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Lobos won their third straight title, defeating the Lobos 64-58.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

New Mexico plus-8 at San Diego State: $440 to win $400

The Lobos don’t make a lot of sense. In their last tuneup before conference play, they went to Grand Canyon University and lost. Then in the first two Mountain West games, New Mexico went 2-0 with two double-digit victories, including the first loss of the year for Colorado State.

Maybe it just means the Lobos will be formidable at home, as usual, and a complete crapshoot on the road. Even if that’s the case, I think they’ve got a decent chance to cover on the road tonight against the offensively challenged Aztecs.

The conference race is off to a bizarre start, thanks largely to that Rams loss and San Diego State’s two-point loss at Fresno State (6-9). Even Wyoming had to work hard to get a win at San Jose State, which has been one of the worst teams in Division I.

All of this means that it might be tough to keep a good ATS going as I continue to pick every Mountain West game on Twitter, but I’m hoping a battle of the two teams who have controlled this league for the past several years results in a close score.

Standings: Bern (61-52-1, $11,526), Keefer (58-60-2, $9,527), Brewer (54-61-3, $5,155)
