Vegas Play of the Day: UNLV at Boise State

UNLV Loses Close Game to UNR

UNLV guard Cody Doolin (45) yells in frustration as another foul is called while battling UNR at the Thomas & Mack Center on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. L.E. Baskow.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

UNLV plus-5 at Boise State: $550 to win $500 : If sports books want to keep handing out free money, I’ll take it by playing the Rebels. This is the fourth time I’ve used hometown UNLV in our Play of the Day contest, posting a 2-1 mark entering today’s game at Boise State.

UNLV will win this game straight up. On our Rebel Room podcast Monday, a few hours before the opening line was set, I predicted a UNLV win by double digits. Needless to say, I was shocked UNLV is the betting underdog.

Yes, UNLV lost last week to lowly UNR, and yes, it’s impossible to predict how the Rebels’ roster of primarily young players will perform on a nightly basis. Young players are inconsistent, no matter how talented. They were guilty of overlooking UNR, an opponent not viewed as a threat.

That won’t happen against Boise in what is essentially a must-win game. I expect the Rebels to play with urgency. And Boise State is without its best player, senior guard Anthony Drmic, who is out with an ankle injury. UNLV should control the backcourt with Cody Doolin and Rashad Vaughn.

Standings: Bern (61-52-1, $11,526), Keefer (60-61-2, $9,897), Brewer (56-60-3, $6,355)
