Vegas Play of the Day: Tigers at Reds

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Detroit Tigers minus-105 at Cincinnati Reds: $525 to win $500: There’s great value in betting Detroit and starting pitcher David Price tonight. Price enters having pitched back-to-back complete games, striking out a combined 19 batters and walking just one. Price, a lefty, will have his way with the heart of the Reds’ batting order — left-handed hitters Jay Bruce and Joey Votto. Brandon Phillips, another solid Cincinnati hitter, has been slowed with a hamstring injury and won’t provide relief from the right side of the plate.

The good value on Price is because Cincy will counter with Johnny Cueto, who leads the National League with an insane 1.25 earned run average. Opponents are batting just .214 against Cueto. Price, though, is more dominating — even if it’s by a slim margin. And Detroit is hands down better than the Reds, who are six games under .500 and likely to trade Cueto to a contender before the end of the season.

Standings: Bern (84-73-1, $11,405), Keefer (82-83-2, $9,342), Brewer (71-87-3, $110)
