Vegas Play of the Day: Cubs at Cardinals

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals, Total Under 7 at minus-110: $440 to win $400: There shouldn’t be much offense in tonight’s Cubs-Cardinals game. The Cardinals’ starter, Carlos Martinez, enters with a 2.89 earned run average and is always a threat to strikeout 10 or more batters.

The Cubs counter with Jason Hammel, who has a 2.65 earned run average. In five starts this month, Hammel has given up just seven earned runs in 31 innings, including 7 and ⅔ scoreless innings June 23 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his most recent start.

Additionally, the Cubs’ offense has struggled in the past week, scoring just five runs in their past five games.
