Vegas Play of the Day: BYU vs. Portland

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

BYU minus-8 vs. Portland: $440 to win $400

In its two-point quarterfinal win against St. Mary’s, BYU made nearly twice as many free throws (29) as St. Mary’s attempted (15). What I take from that is that the Cougars, who are still on the bubble, are likely to get the benefit of the doubt while playing at the Orleans Arena, so I’ll roll with them to get to Tuesday’s finals.

The league wants Gonzaga vs. BYU in the championship, and with both teams as sizable favorites, that’s probably going to happen. I’m hoping that BYU doesn’t need to sweat this one out like Saturday, or if it does, that the refs will do their part again to push them along.
