A battle is brewing atop the South Point-lined Play of the Day standings.

Taylor Bern passed me for the first time in months with a winner yesterday in the contest, which began with fictional $10,000 bankrolls.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim plus-110 at San Francisco Giants: $370 to win $407

There’s no better cure for a disappointing first month of the season than opening the next one against perhaps the most offensively inept team in the majors. More was expected from the Angels after they had the best record in baseball last season, but they’re just 11-11 to start the year.

Their problems appear minor compared to the Giants, which have scored just 66 runs so far. The only teams with fewer runs are the Phillies and White Sox, both of which have played fewer games.

San Francisco is fortunate to be 9-13, according to the simple rating system. It’s been the second-worst team in the league by the metric that accounts for both run differential and strength of schedule.

It’s hard to get behind the idea that San Francisco starter Chris Heston deserves to be favored over opposing pitcher C.J. Wilson. The Giants’ rookie has pitched well in four starts, but it’s going to be difficult to sustain as teams get more scouting information on him.

The Angels’ offense is better than the 89 runs they’ve scored so far. They’ll bust out in May.

Standings: Bern (77-67-1, $11,562), Keefer (77-74-2, $11,057), Brewer (68-81-3, $2,595)
