Vegas Play of the Day: Phillies at Mets

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

New York Mets minus-1.5 vs. Philadelphia Phillies at plus-115: $300 to win $345 Betting the run line in baseball is a risky wager. Not only do you need a team to win, you need them to win by two or more runs. And betting the Mets, who rank 13th in the National League in runs scored, is an even riskier proposition.

This is one of the rare exceptions where the Mets are attractive. Philly starter Jerome Williams enters with a 5.44 earned run average and has just 28 strikeouts in 45 innings, meaning the Mets will put the ball in play to create run-scoring chances.

I don’t expect much from the Phillies offense, which ranks last in the National League in runs scored. New York starter Jacob deGrom is one of the best young starters in baseball, striking out 11 batters in eight scoreless innings in his most recent start. He has a 1.11 earned run average this season and shouldn’t give up much tonight. Let’s hope the Mets’ offense can scratch out a few runs.

Standings: Standings: Bern (79-70-1, $11,300), Keefer (81-80-2, $9,617), Brewer (70-83-3, $2,225)
