We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Oakland Raiders plus-3 vs. New York Jets at Even money: $500 to win $500

Think of the Raiders’ position in the betting market as an off-name brand. They’re priced inexplicably lower than their equals.

Oakland’s reputation as a moribund franchise precedes the team among gamblers, despite the fact that it’s showing strong signs of forward progress this year. The Raiders are dynamic offensively this year, with the seventh-rated passing game by Football Outsiders’ DVOA.

Quarterback Derek Carr and wide receiver Amari Cooper are two of the most promising young players at their position in the NFL. They’re explosive enough to gash a stingy Jets defense — especially at home.

East coast teams playing in Pacific time zone are traditionally a losing bet, and the Jets haven’t played in the West in more than a year. They lost that game 31-0 to the Chargers.

That holds no weight considering how different their team is this year, but this is in no way an opportune spot. New York is banged up both physically and emotionally after falling just short at divisional rival New England last week.

Oakland is healthier on the injury report, cozier at home and ultimately better than the odds are depicting.
