Vegas Play of the Day: UNLV at UNR

UNLV Football Versus UNR for Fremont Canon

L.E. Baskow

Soldiers guard the Fremont Cannon as UNLV faces Nevada at Sam Boyd Stadium on Friday, November 29, 2014. .

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

UNLV plus-7 at UNR: $440 to in $400: This is a perfect spot for the UNLV football team to get the Fremont Cannon back from UNR, who has won nine of the past 10 games in the series. UNR is coming off back-to-back road trips, including at Buffalo last week, and could be struggling for stamina late in the game. Forget about the talk on how the rivalry should be played at the end of the season — for UNLV, it’s ideal scheduling to upset UNR.

UNLV enjoyed a confidence-building 80-8 win last week at home, and while the victory was against lower-classification Idaho State, the program’s record-setting day was impressive. And they didn’t have to travel to Buffalo and back.

UNR has a first-year starter at quarterback in Tyler Stewart, who has passed for just 618 yards and five touchdowns in four games. It averages 154.5 passing yards per game to rank 116th nationally. If UNLV gets ahead, Stewart isn’t qualified to rally his team to victory. Reno averages 210 rushing yards per game to rank 36th nationally, meaning it will try to win the game on the ground. With the Wolf Pack unable to pass, expect UNLV to load the line of scrimmage to stop the run.

Also expect the Fremont Cannon to make an appearance on the UNLV campus next week. Get your red paint ready.
